What is a rapid strep throat test?
Also called a rapid antigen detection test, it’s a quick in-office way to confirm group A Streptococcus, the specific bacteria that causes strep throat, far faster than waiting on a send-off throat culture. A provider gently swabs the back of your throat and tonsils, and the sample is checked right there in the clinic. The American Academy of Family Physicians estimates that strep causes only about 15 to 30 percent of sore throats in children and 5 to 15 percent in adults, so testing matters. Most sore throats are viral and don’t need antibiotics at all. The test is how we know whether you’re in the group that truly needs them.
A positive rapid test is reliable enough to start treatment. If the rapid test comes back negative in a child or teenager, we can send a backup throat culture to the lab to be sure, since younger patients face a higher risk of strep complications.
What are the symptoms of strep throat?
Strep throat tends to come on fast. The classic signs are a sudden sore throat, pain when swallowing, fever, red and swollen tonsils that may have white patches, tender swollen glands in the neck, and sometimes tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth. What usually points away from strep and toward a common virus are a cough, runny nose, hoarseness, and pink eye. The two usually differ like this:
You can’t tell strep from a virus by looking alone, which is why the swab matters. Children between 5 and 15 are most commonly affected, per the CDC, though adults get it too, especially parents and anyone around school-age kids. Now that classrooms across Jackson County are back in session, we see strep pick up as students share close quarters again.
How long does a strep throat test take?
The rapid strep test itself takes about 20 minutes to produce a result, based on Cleveland Clinic guidance. That means many walk-in visits at our Vancleave clinic wrap up in a single trip: swab, wait, result, and a treatment plan if you need one. If a backup throat culture is required, that part is grown in a lab and takes 24 to 48 hours, so we’d let you know the follow-up timing before you leave. Because we run an in-house lab and on-site testing, you’re not driving somewhere else for the swab.
Can you use an at-home or over-the-counter strep test?
Not the way you can grab a home COVID test. As of 2026 there’s no FDA-cleared take-home strep test kit sitting on pharmacy shelves. What some pharmacies offer instead is a rapid strep test run in the store by a pharmacist or provider, not a kit you swab yourself at the kitchen table. And even an in-store screen has limits. Swabbing a throat correctly takes some skill, and a poorly collected sample can give a false negative that delays care. A screening on its own also can’t prescribe the antibiotics you’d need if the result is positive. As Cleveland Clinic pediatrician Dr. Wadie Shabab put it, “I recommend visiting a doctor’s office rather than attempting the test at home.”
If it’s clearly a mild cold, you may not need a test at all. But if strep is on the table, an in-office swab gets you an accurate result and, if a prescription is needed, that same visit handles it. Untreated strep can lead to complications like rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation, or a throat abscess, so a confirmed answer is worth the short walk-in.

When should you go to the ER?
Most sore throats, even real strep, are safely handled at a walk-in clinic. But a few symptoms mean you should skip the wait and get emergency care. According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, a sore throat turns into an emergency with severe or prolonged pain, or swollen glands that make it hard to breathe or swallow. In children, the warning signs include drooling or excessive salivation, being unable to swallow liquids, difficulty speaking, unusual irritability, or being unable to move the neck. For any of these, call 911 or get to the closest ER right away. They can signal swelling that threatens the airway, which is a true emergency, not a wait-and-see.
