Think of urgent care as the middle ground: the everyday sicknesses and small injuries that can’t sit around until a next-week appointment, yet aren’t true emergencies. The American Academy of Family Physicians points to everyday problems like colds and flu, sore throats, earaches, sprains and strains, simple fractures, minor cuts and burns, rashes and insect bites, vomiting and diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and non-serious allergic reactions. Urgent care or the ER: which should I pick?
Choose urgent care for non-emergencies you’d normally take to a family doctor, and choose the ER for anything that could be life- or limb-threatening. If you think you’re having a true emergency, don’t drive to a walk-in clinic. For a medical emergency, call 911. The American College of Emergency Physicians lists warning signs that mean the emergency room, not urgent care:
- Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
